Antenatal depression is something that an awful lot of expectant mothers have to go through and for each and every one of them it is a difficult time of their life made worse by the stresses and strains that come along with having a baby.

Although postnatal depression is more commonly recognized with new mothers, antenatal depression can be just as damaging to the mother as baby bond as post natal depression and can also be potentially rather dangerous for both the mother and her unborn child.

According to studies it has been claimed that almost ten percent of all women that are expecting a child suffer from ante natal depression and although it tends to be more common in those mothers who are expecting their first child, it can range through many pregnancies and has the potential to get a lot worse as recurrent pregnancies happen and also better.

There are a number of reasons to why antenatal depression happens and one of them could be the mother’s fears and confusion to do with the pregnancy. This tends to be more so with the first child that is born but can range through many pregnancies and could be due to the fact that the expectant mother is worried about the pregnancy or the labor process and is unsure of how to deal with it in the correct manner. Although there is no definitive right or wrong for the pregnancy, new mothers can still be cautious and wary and this can bring about antenatal depression.

Scares or complications throughout the pregnancy can also bring on the signs of antenatal depression. This could be due to sudden bleeding or pain, or a fear that comes with having previous miscarriages or stillbirths and they are worried that the same may happen again. They may be anxious about the whole pregnancy or just through part of it and this can be another trigger behind antenatal depression.

If a mother is expecting a child and has plans to be a single parent, this can be very difficult to deal with and unfortunately can happen an awful lot with the increase of promiscuous activity and young couples finding themselves in a sticky spot. This can bring about antenatal depression, as the mother may be concerned about how she is going to deal with having a new baby without her partners help.

Antenatal depression is something that happens frequently to pregnant women but is sometimes brushed aside and blamed on the hormones that are raging throughout her body. This can be dangerous however and there are many adverse side effects that could potentially happen if the antenatal depression is not dealt with in the appropriate manner. A diagnosis will need to take place and this can only be obtained through a medical professional and many new mums are worried about seeking medical advice regarding this problem as it has been believed that this makes them a bad parent that is not the case by any means.
